About
Tariq is a Leeds-based drummer and educator with a focus on improvisation, personal development and holistic learning. Having played music for over 20 years and completed his BA in Jazz in 2024, he is now an active member of the music scene in Leeds and beyond, expanding his teaching practice alongside his ever-growing performance career.
From an early age, Tariq has been lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the UK’s best musicians, having trained from the age of 8 at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music’s Young Musicians Programme, where he was mentored by veteran drums and percussion performer and educator Roger Hempsall. He performed in multiple concerts throughout his time on the programme, continuing until the age of 16.
Having spent his late teens and twenties playing festivals around Europe, street performing on the island of Tenerife and the streets of Porto and Lyon, he decided during lockdown to dive deeper into music by starting a degree at LCoN, surrounding himself with some of the UK’s best, including acclaimed improviser Matthew Bourne and drummer Dave Walsh.
He now wants to take all he has learned about music and beyond, and give back to a world that has been so generous to him. Tariq frequently hosts free music lessons in his local community, has been part of many volunteer schemes both musical and beyond, has extensive experience working with SEND students, and has also received training from charity YYM.
Teaching
Lessons with me will always be tailored to your interests, using your own musical identity as the starting point for your journey with the drums. Learning songs will only be a fraction of what we cover; technique, musicianship, improvisation, transcribing (writing down music by ear), experimentation, music theory, singing and more will all be part of the learning experience. My goal is not simply to teach you drums, but to share the skills that will help you become your own musician.
